Rishu Gandhi a 29 year Old Infosys employee left her job in 2016 to start an eco-friendly baby care brand-Mother Sparsh. This eco-friendly and organic baby care brand now producing sales worth around Rs 40- Rs 45 lakhs per month and almost 3.5 crores annual turnover.
Mother Sparsh’s water based baby wipes are claimed to be India’s first and only biodegradable eco-friendly wipes made of 100% plant-based fabric, dermatologically tested, polyester free, extra strong and velvety-soft for babies skin.
In 2015 Rishu Gandhi was working in Infosys, during lunchtime while in a discussion with her colleague she got an idea which changed her life’s direction.
“I belong to a business family and always had a desire to start something of my own. One day, my colleague was complaining about the polyester wipes that resulted in rashes on her child’s skin. That led me to research the baby products market,” she says. She says to a news portal.”
How Mother Sparsh Started?
Understanding a need: The 29 year old IT professional turn entrepreneur understand the seriousness of the issues faced by a Mother for her child developing rashes through wipes. These types of problems which raises due to low quality artificial material made products, can be sorted using eco-friendly organic materials in manufacturing. This key point made Rishu think seriously and taking a decisive turn in her career path.
Market research: Before starting Mother Sparsh ,Rishu Gandhi went with a deep analysis and throughout market research in the baby care segment. She went through surveying the market and existing products. Rishu observed a huge gap in the baby care segment and realized that there was a dire need for baby care products that were eco-friendly and organic.
Mother Sparsh Launch in Baby Care Industry
Since Rishu belong to a business background she thought of discussing her plans with her father and some close relatives who were already in same business. This was required for more clarity, confidence, guidance and support.
“I wanted to do eco-friendly products, but I did not have any clue on how to begin. My father was the first person I approached and he supported me. I told some of my relatives about my plan and they introduced me to a third-party manufacturer. That was when my new journey began,” Rishu recalls.
Rishu’s Father supported her in her idea. In 2016, Rishu launched Mother Sparsh brand in bootstrapped phase in Mohali, Punjab. She put forward her first offering under her brand which was claimed to be India’s first eco-friendly; biodegradable wipes which were 98 percent water-based wipes having zero polyster.The zero Polyester wipes are very pure and absolutely skin friendly, healthy for baby.
Rishu says her Mother Sparsh brand products are Ayurvedic in nature and very skin-friendly. They are designed to protect a baby’s sensitive skin from redness, rashes, rashes, boils, allergies, dryness, and much other type of issues.
As per Rishu, Doctors suggest that strong perfume and chemical-based products available in market are harmful for baby’s delicate and sensitive skin. . Mother Sparsh’s water-based wipes are made of natural plant-based fabric, purified water, and are velvet-soft.”
Mother Sparsh Products are currently get manufactured by a third party manufacturing unit based in Ludhiana, and raw materials like wipe making fabrics are sourced from Gujarat and some other places.
Just after the launch of Mother Sparsh, Rishu planned to hit the retail sector. However it proved to be a big setback for her in a market where major players like Himalaya, Johnson & Johnson, Chicco, and many others were already established. Rishu spent around Rs 1 crore in advertising and marketing her products in Gujarat and Rajasthan.
“I jumped into the retail industry with full confidence in my product, and that was the biggest blunder I made. I forgot that there were other dominating brands too who wouldn’t let me survive. I wasted almost Rs 1 Crore and that was the biggest lesson I learned,” she says to a media agency. “
The idea of launching in retail segment made a big loss to her. After this setback Rishu changed her strategy and decided to try product sampling. The company provided free samples to target customers and educated them about their products. In the same year,researchandmarkets.com (a market research agency) recognized the Mother Sparsh as one of the first brands to launch water-based wipes; this gave a boost to entrepreneurship in her. She kept following her dreams and gradually her efforts came fruitful. Mother Sparsh gradually became a sought after brand for eco-friendly baby wipes and established market recognition.
In duration of 3 years from start, Now Mother Sparsh-The eco-friendly and organic brand is able to achieve a product sale of 40-45 lakh per month through on-counter sales and online orders on Flipkart, FirstCry, Amazon, PaytmMall, Snapdeal etc. The company generates an annual turnover of Rs 3.5 crore.
Extending the Product Portfolio
After this three year journey Rishu obtained sufficient experience and knowledge to think for diversifying product portfolio adding more varieties and increasing range. Mother Sparsh recently launched tummy roll-ons (a concoction made of heeng, which is traditionally used in India to tackle stomachaches in babies), insect repellents, cooking oil, and more. Few months back Mother Sparsh 99 percent water-based wipes were launched in the market.
“There’s no brand that has launched cooking oil for kids. We thought to innovate, and launched a blend of olive and rice bran oil for kids. It possesses high nutritional value and is good for their health,” Rishu told to a media agency.
Now Mother Sparsh Product Portfolio includes all basic baby care stuffs like laundry detergent, liquid cleanser, massage oil, and more.
“We are also planning to hit the retail segment in the upcoming years” Rishu says to a media.
