In 2015, Gaurav Munjal, Roman Saini and Hemesh Singh started Unacademy– an educational technology startup based in Bangalore, India. Roman Saini,co-founder and chief educator at Unacademy is an IAS officer and a doctor from AIIMS. Unacademy is a platform that offers both free and paid online education in India. Unacademy has more than 400 enrolled active educators and 10000 plus registered educators. The educators consist of either students who have cleared various exams or mentors who have teaching experience. Startup provides online coaching for various exams of India like IIT JEE, NEET, and UPSC.
Unacademy aims to give unlimited access to live classes by the best teachers in the country. Learners get a personalised learning experience that is enhanced by doubt-clearing sessions with the educators, interactive classes and a live test series.
How Unacademy was started?
On 31st of December 20010,Gaurav Munjal a third year student in an engineering college, decided to do something new as his new year resolution. He thought that “I will start something new however big or small”. He recorded an educational video and uploaded it in his newly created YouTube channel. Unacademy first began as a channel on YouTube in 2010 by Gaurav Munjal. The platform currently has over 10,000 registered educators and 13 million learners.
In December 2015, Roman Saini and Hemesh Singh partnered with Gaurav Munjal to found the company as its own venture. The company is registered as Sorting Hat Technologies Pvt Ltd.
In a reply to a question on Quora, Gaurav Munjal says,” One of the things that I am a part of and I am proud of that is Unacademy. Unacademy started off as one video created for our classmates in 2011 and is now India’s largest YouTube Educational channel for quality education across majorly UPSC and CAT preparation and other subjects like History, Memory Techniques and Computer Science. In last thirty days Unacademy had over 1.4 million video views. It has over 135, 0000 subscribers and very high social media interactions on Twitter and Facebook.”

In its future plan it is going to expand with the launch of Unacademy Plus, a subscription model to enlarge the existing paid subscriber user base.
In a report published in economics times, The Platform has scored an A grade in Valuation .However Recently it acquired Jaipur-based online education and career portal Wifistudy, one of the emerging rapidly grown up YouTube channels In October 2018.
In its series funding rounds, The Company has raised a sum of $88.6 million from Steadview Capital, Sequoia India, Nexus Venture Partners and Blume Ventures, and others. Recently in 2019, learning platform Unacademy closed a $50 million Series D funding round from Steadview Capital, Sequoia India, Nexus Venture Partners and Blume Ventures.
However the Company previously raised a Series C round of $21 million in July 2018 from Sequoia India, SAIF Partners, Nexus Venture Partners, and others.
